• Monitor food distribution, ensuring that meals are delivered to the correct recipients and that guidelines, such as those for special diets, are followed
• Take food orders and relay orders to kitchens or serving counters so they can be filled
• Check with customers to ensure that they are enjoying their meals and take action to correct any problems
• Collect payments from customers
• Prepare checks that itemize and total meal costs and sales taxes
• Check patrons' identification to ensure that thermodynamical age requirements for consumption of alcoholic beverages
• Clean tables or counters after patrons have finished dining
• Inform customers of daily specials
• Stock service areas with supplies such as coffee, food, tableware, and linens
• Remove dishes and glasses from tables or counters, take them to kitchen for cleaning
• Perform food preparation duties such as preparing salads, appetizers, and cold dishes, portioning desserts, and brewing coffee
• Fill salt, pepper, sugar, cream, condiment, and napkin containers

• Examine freight to determine loading sequences
• Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, power lifts, or front-end loaders to load bales, bundles, or other heavy items onto trucks for shipping to smelters or other recycled materials processing facilities
• Record shipment data, such as weight, charges, space availability, damages, or discrepancies for reporting, accounting, or recordkeeping purposes
• Examine shipment contents and compare with records such as manifests, invoices, or orders to verify accuracy
• Prepare documents, such as work orders, bills of lading, or shipping orders, to route materials
• Pack, seal, label, or affix postage to prepare materials for shipping, using hand tools, power tools, or postage meter
• Compute amounts, such as space available, shipping, storage, or demurrage charges, using computer or price list
• Identify staff training and development needs to ensure that appropriate training can be arranged
• Evaluate workers' performance and prepare written performance evaluations

• Prepare specialty foods such as pizzas, fish and chips, sandwiches, and tacos, following specific methods that usually require short preparation time
• Operate large-volume cooking equipment such as grills, deep-fat fryers, or griddles
• Clean, stock, and restock workstations and display cases
