At this job, we produce smaller precision components as part of the manufacturing industry. I primarily operate Tsugami (B0205-V) and Muratec (MW100) machines. It's a fast-paced environment where we typically run four machines simultaneously. Throughout the shift, we perform regular part inspections and track tolerances to ensure quality standards are met.

If parts fall out of spec, we make necessary adjustments to the machine settings. We use an optical comparator for detailed measurements and verify torque to ensure alignment with blueprint specifications. Additionally, we handle tooling changes, monitor oil levels, and ensure the machines are running efficiently throughout the day.

Some tools require touch-off procedures before continuing production. Occasionally, we troubleshoot minor errors or resolve issues when parts get stuck, but these are usually straightforward to fix. Overall, it’s a dynamic and rewarding role with a strong focus on precision and efficiency.

I was hired as a TIG welder in the aerospace industry, where we specialized in repairing components such as T2s, shafts, turbines, and manifolds. The repair process began by logging into the Pentagon system to access part numbers and technical manuals to ensure we followed zero-time procedures before beginning any work.

As I completed my welding tasks, I developed a strong interest in machining. I started working as a CNC operator, where I made tolerance adjustments, replaced tooling, and ensured proper settings for the parts we ran. Most of the repairs, however, were performed using manual equipment — including manual lathes and mills — where tolerances typically ranged from .001" to .005", and in some cases, as tight as .0002".

I learned to operate manual lathes, mills, and both OD and ID grinders. I’ve always enjoyed acquiring new skills, and machining gave me a different kind of satisfaction — it was cleaner than welding, though I genuinely enjoy both trades.

Most parts required welding, but certain components needed additional processes like nickel plating or metal spray. We also had to indicate each part to check for runout and reference the manuals to determine whether a part met the criteria for repair before beginning the work order.

In addition to welding and machining, I performed inspection tasks, using tools such as the CMM and optical comparator to obtain precise measurements before final inspection.

In this role, I began as a general laborer, but I was passionate about learning the welding trade. After just two months with the company, I was given the opportunity to train in both TIG and MIG welding. Our work primarily involved sheet metal — we would measure, cut using a shear, and bend the material using a CNC brake press. Once the pieces were prepped, we would square and assemble the units, welding them together to form water-holding components for our swamp coolers.

We built the swamp coolers from the ground up, including wiring, motor installation, and final testing before delivery to customers. During this time, I developed hands-on skills in welding and electrical work, including reading blueprints and wiring transformers to complete fully functional units. Our projects ranged from large-scale swamp coolers for greenhouses to more compact units for workshops.

This experience taught me not only technical skills, but also what I’m capable of achieving when I dedicate myself to learning and growth.
