ASU's Undergraduate Summer Research Program
Dr. Arul Mozhy Varman & Dr. Shazia Tabassum Hakim
May 2024 - July 2024
I gained valuable research experience in Dr. Arul Mozhy Varman's lab at the ASU Biodesign Institute Building C, where I was fortunate to have an insightful mentor, Nandini Kannoju. During my time in the lab, I deepened my understanding of the functions of updated laboratory equipment and the significance of contemporary cellular concepts, particularly regarding gene insertion into PCO 6803 using plasmids and mini-prep techniques. I also had the opportunity to observe the Gibson 2 method in action and learn how it is performed. Under mentorship, I took on key tasks related to an important project, including independently preparing agar plates in two different mediums and cultivating cultures while ensuring that all lab equipment was kept clean. Additionally, I learned how to prepare stock solutions and appreciated their vital role in our experiments.
Outdoor Field Experience
Dr. Paul T. Arbetan & Dr. Demetra Skaltsas
Fall 2023
I gained valuable hands-on experience researching the significance of lichen in the Tsaile and Navajo areas through my BIO-326 class with Paul T. Arbetan. I spent over six hours each week assisting Dr. Demetra Skaltsas and her MS students in collecting data for their study on plant diversity in the mountains near Tsaile, focusing on lichen. During this time, I learned how to create maps and data sheets, which deepened my understanding of the importance of mapping plants and the concepts related to diverse gene pools. I truly developed a passion for patience within the research STEM community.
