  • Research area:

High resolution fMRI studies in non-human primates

Developed original high field MRI techniques and methods for data analysis and performed extensive testing and applications in non-human primates. Worked with neuroscience team in a project to develop high spatial resolution (submillimeter resolution) fMRI methodologies to map the somatotopic representation of the distal fingerpads in the somatosensory cortex of non human primates during vibrotactile stimulation. Developed protocols to combine fMRI methodology with other high resolution techniques such as intrinsic signal optical imaging and electrophysiology to investigate the dependence of BOLD signal response on stimulus parameters and on underlying neural response properties. Used high field fMRI to assess the different function roles for the sub-regions of SI cortices in vibrotactile intensity encoding as well as the connectivity and structure-function relationship between different brain regions.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of Manganese Accumulation in the Rat Brain Associated with Iron-Deficiency and Supplementation

Developed MRI methods to assess patterns of metal deposition within rat brain. Worked with pharmacologists and toxicologists to use MRI technology to facilitate the monitoring Mn deposition in rats overtime to address the function of both Fe deficiency and Fe supplementation in the exacerbation or amelioration of Mn brain levels in vivo. Developed imaging methods and data analysis approaches for understanding interaction of different metals. Developed a novel mathematical model to describe the metal deposition pattern using advanced optimization algorithm and Monte Carlo simulation.

Oral and poster presentations in annual meetings of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), Neuroscience Annual meeting and Annual Society of Toxicology meeting; participated and presented in Frontiers in Neuroimaging Symposium, Frontiers of Biomedical Imaging Science Conference, and the annual Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science research retreat.
